The role of
women has been an ongoing issue, from the yearning for voting rights to the idea
of being inferior to men. This article highlights how women have gained more
power in the world today, specifically through sports. It is very crucial that
women continue to fight for their equality because they have the right to and
should uphold it. Even as a young girl, I always wanted to find Prince Charming
so he could take care of me and we could live happily ever after; however, as I
grew up I soon found that women should not just take a backseat to the men's
lifestyle, rather a woman should have the same opportunities to succeed. I have
always wanted to be a mother and be at home, but there is a difference between
what I want to do and being forced through society's standards. This situation
can compare to the couple in Guess Who's
Coming over for Dinner because they are going against the norm of society
and fighting for their love, just as everyday women are fighting for their
equality. Today women, similar to minority races, are holding back the barriers
and making gender equality possible for the future.
Through various events, such as
the Olympics, women have been strengthening their role at the national and
international levels. Women, specifically in the United States, have dominated the
global spectrum by winning nearly twice as many medals as men in the United
States. Even internationally, various races of women are gaining a positive
image for themselves, their countries and the generations to come. The media
has capitalized on these successes and given women credit in the headlines;
however, this is not to say that the media is always supportive, because so
often society belittles women. For example, the media tells women to follow
their place in society as homemakers and even portrays them as objects in
society, specifically in advertisements that depict women provocatively or as
the object itself. Women have taken these feedbacks of society and learned from
them, as they are now leading companies and truly competing with men. The
future is open for women, as long as the media and society allows, and that
women stay persistent.
